Creating a Smaller URL the Easy Way

We had a call this morning about getting a smaller url for a publication. I wanted to let everyone know that it's easy and free and you can do it yourself. Simply go to TinyURL.com and paste your url in the box and click "Make Tiny URL! button (see below). Copy the new url and use it whenever you need to.

  1. I might note that shortened URLs can be a problem, because they obscure the actual page you'll be visiting, and can therefore be used to direct you to a page containing malware (though most services try to screen this) or objectional content. I'd only recommend using shortened urls in print publications (easier for the user, though they are generally case-sensitive) or when using a service like Twitter that has a character limit.

On the web or in email, you can just create a link and not worry about folks having to type it in. Also, you may want to look at bit.ly, where you can register and then track statistics on the use of the links.
